What to do with my hair?

I have afro hair which is thick and coarse. At the moment I get it relaxed at the hairdresser's. Because of the thickness of my hair, they always relax more than my roots and leave it until it irritates my scalp (my scalp is sensitive). I have problems with breakage but my hairdresser tells me this is because I need to be relaxing it more often (I do it every 2.5 months). I'm not sure if this is a good idea, a)because it will work out to be so expensive and b)I am afraid it will ruin my hair even more.

Secondly, I have problems maintaing the straightness of the hair when I dry it after washing it. I usually try to put it in curls or wrap it but I seem to be useless at it because the ends are always frizzy. I'm afraid to blow-dry or flat-iron in case I ruin my hair more.

I was thinking of growing out my natural hair and flat-ironing it straight but I'm not sure how feasible that is on my type of hair. Basically I need advice on the way to have straight hair without ruining it.

I'm not African- american, but I think your hair type is very pretty, especially when I see a short style. That is a lot of money. Save it and go on a fabulous vacation.

If you get an ionic blowdryer and flat iron, it won't do that much damage to your hair. I have a Chi blowdryer and a Helen of Troy flat iron, and my super curly hair looks stick straight. On top of that, I don't have to worry about cutting split ends, but every two -three months.

Hi there, I also have VERY thick, coarse hair. Two and a half months is about the average time between relaxers (6-8 weeks). If you are worried about the cost, then maybe try to find a local beauty school (they cost about half as much as a regular salon and if you request the students who are about to graduate, they are on par with the professionals) or a neighbor who will relax it for you for less money than the pros.

I understand your problem about the relaxer being hard on your scalp too- I used to have to pick scabs off my head for about 2 weeks after having it relaxed. It hurts and it is embarrassing. But, my neighbor just relaxed my hair last week and she used a new relaxer (I think it came in a green box and might have said something about being organic) and it straightened my hair as usual, but it did not burn my scalp at all.

As for the everyday straightening and styling- a few years ago I went to Sally's Beauty Supply and bought a good flat-iron (it cost about $75, but it worth it). They also sell products that protect your hair from the heat or you can get some real good products at JC Penney's salon. I use the flat iron on my hair 1-2 times per week and it does no harm and will take care of those frizzy ends as long as you use the right products.

Good luck!

Part your hair do the left or right side of hair were it doesnt stick up. (just not to far or it will look funny)

Then take a brisel brush and seperate your hair in sections.Take small parts of our hair and slow straighten it with the brush and a skinny blow dryer nosel that you can but for cheap .

Make sure that before you blow dry your hair that you towel dry it before you blow dry because your hair will be to wet... ..........

I straighten %26amp; and blow dry my hair every day and it has burnt my hair only one because i put it to high.......

Your hair might be kind of frizzy after blow drying but then you can straighten if you want so it is not so frizzy just make sure it's not to HOT!!!

If you go to sally's beauty supply or west coast or walmart you an find a straighting spray that will prefent your hair from burning and and frizzeyness ... at sallys or west coast i bought biosilk to blow dry my hair in section because it' like puting silk in your hair then i used a anti-frezzyness straighting hair spray that helped tremendouly!!!!!!!

I hope this works......GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOCK IT UP!!! trust me, all you people out there (especially African Americans) struggling with trying to keep course hair straight...JUST STOP!!! My sister and I are in our 30's and 40's and we spent years doing the same thing and waisting tons of money. I think I paid for my hair stylist Mercedes and house with the amount of money I spent on my hair. Lock it up...you'll be glad you did...I know I am:-)
